~ Padre Pio

This is an important lesson to learn. Thankfully the kids see this weekly at Mass. We reread the Baltimore Catechism.

We read a wonderful lesson over at the Catholic Toolbox all about the Consecration of the Mass.
We worked on a few worksheets from That Resource Site.

History~
The Civil War

Learning about the civil war has been a wonderful journey. We have learned so much about the struggle our country went through. To help us with this journey, we used Homeschool in the Woods History Through the Ages: Time Travelers History Study The Civil War.

We enjoyed using this program. It contained a wonderful timeline, great hands-on projects to do, and yummy (and not so yummy) recipes to try.
You can see more about this fun unit study here.(Link coming soon)

We watched a wonderful documentary about The Civil War by Ken Burns.

Great Words~
The Gettysburg Address

We read the Gettysburg Address together. I then have Michael and Therese both try to recite it. I love to see how far they will get. Eventually they will have it all memorized. They do read it every night at bed time. I also encourage them to write it down to help with memorization.

Till next time,
~Monique

Traveling Thursdays~ Devils Tower, Wyoming

Devils Tower in Wyoming is a national monument. It truly is an amazing geological structure. Out of nowhere, this huge tower appears. All around are rolling plains. It looks like it doesn't belong there, but there it is. A tower rising out of the earth.

Devils Tower is a sacred place to many of the Native American tribes in the area. It's also called Mato Tipita or Bear Lodge. They have a beautiful legend as to how the tower was created.

We were lucky enough to hear the Legend from a from a young man. He did a wonderful job of retelling the legend from his ancestors.

Devils Tower rises 1267 feet above the Belle Fourche River. The site does have parks office where you can learn more about the history of Devils Tower.
The kids were able to get their passport stamped in the gift shop.

As we walk along the path, we noticed colorful ribbons tied to trees. We learned later that these were prayer ribbons and prayer cloths. They are beautiful and remind you how connected the Native American tribes are to this majestic tower. The cloths seemed to add a peacefulness to the area. You got lost in the beauty and sacredness of our land.

And for you more adventurous folks out there, you can actually climb devils tower. I think they are crazy, but to each his own. Many Native American tribes find climbing the tower disrespectful. They view this as sacred ground. It's a shame that we can not honor the wishes great tribes that were here before us.

Till Next Time,
Monique

K is for Keeping Calm~ Blogging Through the Alphabet

I'm linking up with A Net in Time and Hopkins Homeschool again for the Blogging Through the Alphabet.

K is for Keeping Calm

As many parents know, it's not always easy to keep your calm when everything else around you seems to be falling apart!

You know how it is...
the baby is crying
the toddler has dumped powered sugar all over the floor
the dog has chewed up your favorite pair of shoes
tears are flowing from the child struggling to learn how to read
the 10 year old just doesn't want to sit down and so school
the washing machine is broken
the fridge drawers have broken in the last few days....all 3 of them
yes, this just happened
you forgot about the dinner in the oven and now it's burnt

We've all had days like this. Some of us seem to have more days like than others. It doesn't see fair but that's the way things are. God never promised life would be. He never promised we'd be happy here in this life. He promised us happiness with Him in eternal life. Some days this is hard to remember when the flying monkeys are part of our circus!

So what's a mama to do?

Take a small break.
When things get too overwhelming and I know I'm on the edge of losing it I pray. My go to prayer is the Hail Mary. I have to believe that Mary struggled with this important role of motherhood too. The pain and anguish she endured was so much greater than what I have ever had to face. I admit sometimes I feel like my intentions are quite small, but I know she will take my prayers and intercede on my behalf. Who better to have praying for me than Mary herself? She was a mother and a wife. She understands the pain, struggles, and happiness we go through.
When I pray the Hail Mary or the Rosary, a sense of calm immediately comes over me. Its kind of like when you were little and your mom covered you up with a blanket when you were sick. Everything suddenly felt just right. That's what praying does for me.

I love to start my day with a hot cup of coffee (sometimes a warm cup of tea) and my quiet time with prayer. I've found if I start each day with a few peaceful moments the day just seems to go so much smoother.

How do you keep the calm?

Till Next Time,
Monique

Learning about the Grassland Biome

For science lesson, we have been learning about the different Biomes of our world.
This week was about the Grassland Biomes.

So first off, we checked  out a few books from our local library.

We watched a great little video all about grasslands.

Worksheets we used with our lessons...

The kids then created their own Grasslands diorama using items we had laying around the house.

Michael chose to do the Savannah grasslands.
He used the drawing book to help create his animals. We bought blue gems at the dollar store to give the look of water.

Traveling Thursdays~ Mammoth Site of Hot Springs, South Dakota

The Mammoth Site in Hot Springs, South Dakota is a must see, especially if you have a dinosaur lover. When we started this cross country trip, we asked both kids if there was something they wanted to see. This was on the top of Michael's list.
Around the age of two, Michael became fascinated by dinosaurs. We read every book we could on them and he learned them all by name!

The Mammoth site was discovered in 1974 by accident. For thousands of years, the bones of these majestic animals had remained hidden. It wasn't until the land was being excavated for a housing development that they were found. This was an amazing discovery!

Thankfully to local residents, the site was preserved for all to see.

Today the site is the home to the world's largest collection of Colombian Mammoth exhibit.
It currently has 61 Mammoths in the pit, but the number will continue to grow has future excavations are done.
They have 58 Colombian Mammoths and 3 Woolly Mammoths. Oddly, all the mammoths discovered have been juvenile males. I guess the lady mammoths  were smart enough not to fall in!

The site is an active dig site. It currently has scientist and students working at the site. It is a world renown research center for Pleistocene studies!

When you first enter, you will be greeted by a huge Mammoth skeleton. The staff will greet you and lead you into a theater were you get to watch a 10 minute movie about the site and the mammoths.
From the heater, you will be taken into the actual dig site. This is amazing! Michael loved that he was able to see a real live dig site.

The guided tour of the dig is around 30 minutes. Once it's done, you are free to walk around and explore even more. I think Michael and dad spent an additional 20 minutes in there.
After exploring the dig site, we headed into Exhibit Hall.

The Exhibit Hall is a mini museum. It's filled with life size replicas. You'll see mammoths, a Giant short faced bear, arrowheads, and a variety of other artifacts. You can spend an additional hour in here looking at all the stuff. It's wonderful collection.
Once you leave the hall, you'll enter a nice souvenir store. Here your little paleontologist can find books, toys, shirts, etc. All the proceeds will go back into the dig site.
We did learn about their educational programs too!
They have programs were kids can come and learn all about excavation work. I wish we lived closer. He would be there every day all summer.

So if you're ever in the area, be sure to stop by The Mammoth Site!
You will not be disappointed.
