Review~ Venturing with God in Cong0

Disclosure~I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.

Recently, the kids and I were given the oppurtunity to read Venturing with God in Congo by Darrell Champlin. The book, published by Conjurske Publications, is a collection of missionary tales from Darrell Champlin's time in Congo. After his death in August 2015, his wife Louise worked with Conjurske Publications to create this amazing book about his life's work....Spreading the message of God!

For this review, we received a physical copy of the book, Venturing with God in Congo from Conjuske Publications. The book is a beautiful, hardback compilation of stories from missionary Darrell Champlin. The graphic picture on the front of the book is stunning. The eyes peering out of the dark,lush greens is striking. The coiled up snake is lifelike. The cover definitely grabs the attention and encourages readers to jump on in!

The book itself is 290 pages. There are 49 chapters if you include the Introduction and Epilogue. Each chapter is between four to ten pages long. The length of the chapters makes it a perfect book for reading out loud as family or for a independent reader. Older readers and adults should be able to get through the book fairly quickly. The book also features a timeline, photos of the family, a map of Congo, and a pronunciation guide for names.

Venturing with God in Congo transports readers to the missionary fields of Africa. Readers will be thrilled, encouraged, and inspired as they read the stories of the Champlin's family time in Congo.

The family spent 10 years (1954-1964), working in the jungles of Africa. After reading the introduction, readers join the family on the boat trip across the ocean and then quickly venture into the mysterious jungle. The family quickly adapts to life in the jungle as "jungle rats" Leopards, rogue elephants, snakes, wild boar, monkeys, and Cape buffalo add excitement to the journey. We explore the beauty of the lush jungle, read about a people untouched by God living in darkness, and discover the hidden dangers the missionaries face during their journeys.

This riveting memoir of the family's missionary work gives us a glimpse into what daily life is like for missionaries around the world. We see the power of God at work and see what God can do through the people he uses!

"Do you know God?"

With one simple question, Darrell Champlin brought the word of God to the people of Africa. Story after story, we see the work of God through this amazing man. With great respect for the people, the land, and the animals, Darrell Champlin gives us a glimpse into his daily life. We read about his preaching and about individuals converting to the Christian faith and finding God. We hear stories about adventurous hunting trips, the dangers living in a wild jungle and country, the joys in life God gives us, and even a few unexpected twists and turns. Throughout the stories, readers will find bible passages. These bible passages only bring out the importance of God's meaning in our own lives.

Darrell Champlin lived a dangerous, adventurous life many of us never will experience. Even if we are not called to live a missionary life this way, we can still see God's strength through this amazing memoir.

I encourage anyone who is interested in missionary life to read Venturing with God in Congo.

Review~ Carole P. Roman Children's Books

Hello there and welcome back!

It's been quite awhile since I posted a review. I'm thrilled to share with you a collection of assorted books from Carole P. Roman. For this review, I received 4 different Carole P. Roman's assorted books to read and look over....If You Were Me and Lived in ...The Middle Ages, If You Were Me and Lived in...Elizabethan England, Pepper Parrots's Problem with Patience: A Captain No Beard Story, and Stuck in the Doldrums: A Lesson in Sharing- A Captain No Beard Story.

Carole P. Roman is an award winning author who has written over 50 children's books. Her books will have readers sailing along with pirates, visiting the world of princesses, traveling around the world, and discovering different time periods and cultures. Her books are fun, yet educational. Teachers, parents, and children have found her books to be enchanting and a wonderful addition to their reading piles!

For this review, I received four books from two of the different series from Carole P. Roman. The two series were If You Were Me and Lived in... and Captain No Beard.

The first two books, we read were from her If You Were Me and Lived in... series. This historical series introduces children to various time periods from history. Children will learn about the time period, the customs from that time, how life was, what people wore and did, how life was for the people, and learn about important historical events and place. This series is geared for children of all ages. Younger children can be read the book, while older children can easily read the book themselves.

The illustrations are wonderful and will delight every child that reads the books.This particular series is a great addition for parents following a living book style curriculum. For parents following a classical education finding a book that it twaddle free is a top priority. These books definitely fit that description. The books are written in a simple manner allowing younger children to understand what is being read, but are filled with so much information that older children will find them just as engaging.

For this review, I received If You Were Me and Lived in... The Middle Ages and If You Were Me and Lived in... Elizabethan England. I chose these two history books because of the time period we were studying in history.

I had the kids read If You Were Me and Lived in.. the Middle Ages first since that was the time period we were currently working on. Both my kids were able to read the book in one sitting. Since they are both in high school, I knew this book would be a fairly easy read for them.

However, I knew that the author always provided a wealth of information in her books. I knew they would learn something new. Even though my kids are older, I still like to through in a few easier reads to add to their lessons. Sometimes a quick, easy read allows a school day go smoother and gives them some extra free time that may need to complete other projects they are working on.

After completing the Middle Ages book, they both read If You Were Me and Lived in... Elizabethan England. We were not quite there yet in our history lessons, but I though the short book would give them some insight to what would be coming up in the next few weeks. A perfect introduction to a new time period.

Each book covered a specific time in history and went into great detail about that time period. The books ranged from 50-100 pages. Each written section of the book contains an illustration to give the topic a visual aspect. This is great for younger children. Even if they can't read, the illustrations will provide them with a wonderful understanding of the time period. After the story, each book contains two important sections... a famous people from the time period and a glossary of words introduced in the story.

Mountain of Grace Homeschooling book review

I love these two sections. The pages of important people can help children learn more about a particular person. They could even get an idea for a person to write a report on.

The glossary is a fantastic bonus for children.

It allows children to immediately look up a word that may not know and it offers pronunciation so they can learn how to say the word correctly. It also allows important terms to be introduced to the child too.

The other two books I received to review where part of the Captain No Beard Series of books. This series follows Captain No Beard and his crew as they learn a few important lessons about life.

I chose Pepper Parrot's Problem with Patience and Stuck in the Doldrums- A Lesson in Sharing. I obviously didn't pick these two books for my high school kids, but I did pick them to share with my first grade religious education class I teach on Sundays.

Each week, we share with the kids a virtue and a saint. I thought these two pirate tales would be great to share with my class. This year I have 10 boys in my class.

What little boy doesn't like to hear a story about Pirates?

The kids loved the books!

They were a short read that held their undivided attention, which is a hard thing to do when you have 10 rambunctious boys ready to wrestle! I loved the colorful pictures and the characters where great. Even the girls in my class enjoyed the story of Captain No Beard and his crew! The story introduce a problem and solve it by practicing a simple virtue. For example in Stuck in the Doldrums, Captain No Beard has a problem with sharing. With the help of his crew, he learns why it's important to share with others.
