Today I get to share with you another fantastic resource from Greg Landry's Homeschool Science. A few months ago, we reviewed a science course from College Prep Science, now we get to share with you the self-paced online course Study Skills/Measurement/Lab Reports/Graphing.

Greg Landry is a science teacher, a homeschool father, and a former college professor. His passion for science and his dedication to students led him to create s few science courses ten years ago. Our Experience with Greg Laundry's Homeschool Science

For this review, we received a 12-month subscription to the Study Skills/Measurements/Lab Reports/Graphing course. This course is part of the self-paced online courses offered by Greg Landry's Homeschool Science. The course is a half-semester class geared for students in 7th through 12th grade. 

The course focuses on improving students' study skills! This is essential for success in all the subjects they will take in school. The students will learn how to study, the proper way to take notes, how to graph, ways to improve their long-term memory, how to take the proper measurements, and how to write out lab reports that are correct.

This course is broken up into 8 classes.

These classes are prerecorded. They are about 20-30 minutes long. The courses are on a platform called, Canvas. My college nephew was familiar with it since some of his online classes were on this same platform. The course was easy to follow. Students can easily work through the course on their own.

Over the years, science has not been a favorite subject of mine to teach. When the kids were little, I had no problem teaching science. We often focused on topics the kids were interested in. During their middle school years, a fellow homeschool mom, who enjoyed teaching science, taught them and a group of their friends.  As they entered high school, I knew they needed to have certain science classes to graduate and get into the colleges of their choice. I was excited when we were given the opportunity to review Virtual Lab Chemistry from Greg Landry's Homeschool Science.

Our Experience with Greg Laundry's Homeschool Science

For this review, we received 12-month access to the Chemistry Interactive Virtual Science Lab. 

This subscription allows Therese and Michael to have access to the virtual lab experiments for 12 months. This was a perfect fit for us since both of them will be doing Chemistry this fall.

The Virtual Chemistry Lab offers students 10 different labs to work through.

Before completing any of the labs, we watched the video, "Introduction to the Lab, the Scientific Method, and Lab Reports."This video explains how to use the virtual lab for your experiments, the scientific method, and how to create lab reports. It even offers guidelines for parents for accessing the grades for the student's lab reports. It's a very helpful video. 

One of the nice things about the Virtual Lab is that parents do not need to buy any supplies for the experiments. It's all done online in a cartoon science lab. 

Thelas each have a video that should be watched before completing the lab. The Introduction Video is the longest at 45 minutes. The rest are usually around 8-10 minutes long. After watching the video explaining the topic being covered, then it's time fort he students to give the expeiement a try. 

Each lab is explained in detailed steps. This allows for students to follow along easily and with little to no help at all from parents.

Students will need a notebook to write down notes. An example of a lab report is given for reference for the students. This is a great tool to get them ready for completing their own lab reports. 

The Virtual Lab is a neat concept. It seemed a little strange to me since everything is online. I think most of us think about science labs as being more hands-on. I thought the topics covered were great. The experiments helped students learn more about Chemistry and more importantly about taking notes and creating lab reports. 

Both Michael and Therese felt this course was a great addition to the Chemistry course they will be learning this upcoming school year. They did both say that they didn't mind the online factor, but they wouldn't want all their experiments to be done in an online science lab. They didn't have the same excitement factor as doing experiments in person. I would have to agree. If your student is more of a hands-on learner, I don't feel that this course would be the right fit. 

However, I would highly recommend the Chemistry Virtual Lab to complement any Chemistry course your students are doing. It's a great addition to any other course. I loved how it stressed notetaking and recording your information. It's a little costly, but if you figure out the cost of materials for "real" lab experiments, it probably comes out ahead depending on what program you are using.

Biomes~ Strolling through the Temperate Forest

Our last biome to learn about was the Temperate Forest. We saved the best for last. Since we live in the mountains are technically in the forest this was an easy study for us. In fact, the kid and I have been learning about the temperate (deciduous forest) since we moved up here. 

We've discovered lizards, snakes, toads, tree frogs, deer, raccoons, foxes, coyotes, and bears!

All of these amazing animals have been up close and personal ON OUR BACK PORCH. The bear sitting on the back porch was a little too close to comfort for the chickens and I.

We've also visited the Smoky Mountains over the years and were lucky enough to see the elk that have been reintroduced to that environment. They are truly magnificent animals!

We learned about leaves, pine needles, and all the different trees that surround us. 

The kids collected a variety of leaves from our trees and made a leaf collection. They had to research to discover what type of tree the leaf came from. It was fun project to do!

We found a wonderful selection of reading passages about biomes, worksheets with multiple choice, and for more advance students short answer worksheets. You can check them all out here.
For younger kids, here is a fun matching biome and animal coloring page. The site Ask a Biologist has a lot of great science activities.

The best way to learn about a biome is to get out there and go exploring.
Take a walk, visit a pond, enjoy nature!

Biomes~ Hanging out in the Tropical Rain Forest

Let's explore the tropical rain forest!

It's green, vibrant, hot, and humid.

Are you ready for an adventure?

I know the kids were when we started this trip deep into the rain forest.

For this diorama, the kids used more shoe boxes, construction paper, paint, leaves and flowers, glass pebbles, and plastic animals to create their forest scenes. Almost all of the supplies we've used for this fun dioramas came from the dollar store or from our own craft bin. I loved how the kids drew their own pictures by using books for guides.

Therese even added a hut to her diorama.

We found a few fun sites to explore and some worksheets to help us learn about the different layers of the rain forest.

A fun read along for younger kids is the Magic Tree House book Afternoon on the Amazon and the research guide Rainforests. We read this years ago when the kids were little. we did a unit study all ab out the rain forest. They loved reading these book aloud together!

Biomes~ Wading Through Fresh Water

This biome was pretty easy for us. For years, the kids and I have walked down to the creek and explored its hidden treasures. We've seen frogs, small fish, crayfish, turtles, and a variety of plants along the banks. We even carried home a few special rocks that the kids just couldn't leave behind.

Since we were so familiar with the freshwater biome, the kids decided not to create a diorama for this particular biome. We just took a walk instead! Hands-on learning and a nature walk all in one!

Michael found a crayfish nursery.

They are so little.

and we used an underwater microscope to explore things more closely.

Michael even used a water straw to purify the water and drink some. He's ready to go camping and prepared if he gets lost.

Biomes~ Wandering Around the Desert

It sure is hot out here! But did you know that is can get rather chilly in the desert at night? I'll admit before our studies, I didn't really know this interesting little fact. The kids and I have never been in the desert, so we had no clue! We were amazed with all the life that can be found hanging out in the desert.

Using sand, clay, pipe cleaners, paint, and popsicle sticks, the kids created some pretty amazing dioramas. They really brought the desert to life.

They added snakes and cacti.

Michael even added a man that wandered off  and died in the desert. He got bite by the snake. 

Boys are so silly!

Therese added some color to her desert scene by having the cacti blooming. She even added a mirage of water.

Biomes~ Diving into Marine Waters

Next stop is the ocean. 

We didn't spend much time on this biome at home since the kids were doing Apologia's Exploring Creation with Zoology 2: Swimming Creatures of the Fifth Day with our local homeschool group. A fantastic mom in our group volunteered to teach the kids. It was wonderful. The kids had a blast in class, learned a ton of information, were able to do some cool experiments, and see their friends every week. Us moms were able to have 2 hours to do whatever we wanted!

One of the projects she had them do was to create an ocean biome. Here's what Therese came up with.

We did check out A Journey into the Ocean (Biomes of North America) from the library. This series is amazing and the books are incredible. They are filled with lots of information and stunning pictures!

Biomes~ Traveling through the Tundra & and the Arctic

Our next two stops for our biome study are the Tundra and the Arctic. We choose to do these two envronments together since they are very similar. I'll admit Therese and I have no urge to visit either of these areas. Michael would love to see the ice caps and Polar bears.

Michael said all the animals, like the arctic fox and snow hare, are camouflaged so that's why no one can see them. I personally think he just didn't want to finish his diorama.

Biomes~ Walking through The Grasslands

Learning about the various environments or biomes around the world is always a fun adventure. For our study of the biomes, I had the kids create a diorama for each one we covered. Our first biome was the Grasslands!

Michael choose to the Savannah. His was filled with grass and animals you would see all through out Africa.

He even included a watering hole.

Therese decided to focus on the grasslands or prairies found right here in the United States.

We read a few books all about the grasslands. We found a wonderful selection at our local library.
