Review~ The Giving Manger from WorthyKids

Disclaimer~ I received a COMPLEMENTARY copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.

Good morning! I'm so excited to share with you a wonderful activity to add to your Advent traditions!
The Giving Manger from WorthyKids is a wonderful way to bring the true meaning of Christmas into your family. It will help your family learn about the importance of giving during Advent and Christmas.
The beautiful book and activity will help your family get back to the real meaning of Christmas.

For this review, we received the box set.

Each box set contains everything you will need to start this beautiful tradition.

The Giving Manger Picture Book

A heart-warming story with beautiful illustrations that bring to life the tradition of giving. The story helps get children excited about participating in this new tradition of giving back. The book has a hardback cover so it will last for years.

Wooden Manger

A simple wooden manger that should be placed in a visible spot in the house. This will help keep the idea of giving front and center.

Bundle of Straw

A piece of straw will be placed in the manger after the children perform an act of service.

Baby Jesus

A simple swaddled Baby Jesus that will go in the manger on Christmas Eve after the manger is full of straw from all the acts of service the children will do during the Advent season.

I love the idea behind The Giving Manger.
It is a wonderful way to bring the real meaning of Christmas to your family.
I wish I would have had this when my kids were little. We made our own wooden manger out of popsicle sticks when the kids, This box set is so much cuter!
I love the idea of encouraging the children to work on little acts of service.
We called them good deeds. It brings to life the true meaning of Christmas for children when we live in a world so focused on the commercial aspect of it.

Since my kids were a little old to enjoy this. I have taken it in to use with my Sunday school class. We already have a good deeds jar to fill for the year. This tiny manger will be a wonderful way to encourage them to do more during the season of Advent. Too often, the season of Advent is overlooked. People focus on Christmas and think the season starts before or after Thanksgiving. Christmas actually doesn't start until Christmas Eve! I love helping my little ones learn about Advent and the importance of preparing for the Christmas season.

This beautiful box set would make a wonderful gift for a family with young children. The family could start this tradition when the kids were little and continue to grow with it over the years. When my kids were little we had the tradition of searching for the traveling wisemen (instead of a certain elf that is so popular). That tradition was fun, but the giving manger is fun while encouraging children to have a giving heart. A giving heart is one way to encourage them to grow closer to Jesus and the kingdom of Heaven.

And if you are worried about the straw getting lost or ruined, I figured replacement straw can be found at your local craft store or dollar store. Parents will be able to continue the tradition for years.
Just a word of advice, keep Baby Jesus away from puppies. They tend to eat him. We've lost two Baby Jesus dolls over the years. One was eaten by the dog, the other went missing after a cat decided to steal him out of the manger!
Life with kids and pets is never dull!

Review~ Frankenstein Study Guide from Progeny Press

Disclaimer~ I received a COMPLEMENTARY copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.

Homeschooling high school English literature does not have to be difficult! Recently, we were given the opportunity to review the Frankenstein Study Guide from Progeny Press. We were sent the download link for the study guide. Once, we got the download, we headed to the library to check out Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. Therese has been wanting to read this book for a while now.

Progeny Press is a Christian company that offers homeschooling families a large, wonderful selection of study guides that help students gain valuable insight into strong, classic literature books. We have used a few of the other study guides from Progeny Press throughout the years.

What are the E-Guide Study Guides from Progeny Press?

The literature study guides come in an E-guide form and can be easily downloaded. They cost around $22.00. The Frankenstein Study Guide is recommended for students in grades 10th-12th grade. The study guides can be used in two different ways. The interactive study guide can be opened with Adobe Reader which allows the student to fill in their answers directly into the study guide while working on the computer. The second way the study guide can be used is by printing out the pages for multiple students to use. I always chose to print out the entire study guide. I then place the pages in a small binder, so they can work through it as they read the book. This helps with writing skills and penmanship! I print the entire study guide out at one time, but of course, families can choose to print the lessons out one at a time too.

The purpose of the study guides is to help students better understand the literature they are reading. The guides help students understand how the authors craft their stories, understand the themes being presented, and the ideas introduced during the story. The guides allow students to dig deeper into the literature. For the high school guides, students should be able to complete them in 8-10 weeks. If students work through the study guides for 8 weeks, families can complete 4 different literature guides during the school year. These guides are a great way to complete a high school English literature course.

How was the Frankenstein Study Guide Set Up?

The Frankenstein Study Guide is broken up into 16 sections.
The first section is for the teacher/instructor. This section completely explains how to use the study guide.

Next up is the brief synopsis of the story. This provides the students with a brief summary of the story, introduces them to the plot, and important characters from the story. This section is followed by an introduction to the author. Here students will read a brief biography about the author. They can easily research for more information about the author. This would make a great topic for a small research paper.

The next section is an introduction to the time period when Frankenstein was written. This section gives students some knowledge of the scientific discoveries that were taking place at this time. Students are introduced to the literary movements of the time: Classicism, Rationalism, Romanticism, and Gothic are discussed. Students will also be informed about the 2 great revolutions happening at this time, the American Revolution and the French Revolution.

Pre-Reading activities are up next. This section gives ideas for various projects the students can work on before they begin reading the book. Research the time period, read Faust or the Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Write a paper about the book read. Mapwork and research bioelectricity are other topics students may want to research.  All of these are some great ideas presented to the student to further their knowledge and learning.

The next few sections are where the chapters are broken up.

Letters I-IV
Chapters 1-3
Chapters 4-6
Chapters 7-10
Chapters 11-16
Chapters 17-22
Chapters 23 & 24

These sections are to be completed by the student once they complete the story. They can use their books to help answer the questions. They should also have a dictionary, thesaurus, and a Bible ready to use too. Each of the sections is broken up into different topics.

Vocabulary
Logical Thinking
Questions for Comprehension
Questions for Analysis
Dig Deeper Questions
Optional Activities for Students to complete (art projects, research papers, history projects, and science projects)

The next section is the overview. This section discusses plot, characters, and literary terms like conflict.

Optional Essays is the next section. This section gives students a few more ideas for a writing assignment to complete. They can choose from a compare and contrast paper, a research paper, a literature analysis, and so many others. A few even have references to the Bible to bring faith into the lessons.

The last section in the study guide for the students is the additional resource page. This provides students with other stories written by Mary Shelley, other stories similar in style, and videos and movies to watch.

Each study guide comes with a full answer key. This comes as a separate download so that only the instructor has access to it. I do not print this out. I just look at the answer key on the computer when I need to check Michael's and Therese's answers. I do grade the study guide as part of their English grade.

How Did We Use the Frankenstein Study Guide?

I opted to print out the study guide for Therese. She was already wanting to read Frankenstein, so it worked well for her. Michael was not part of this review. I printed the entire study guide out, 3-hole punched the pages, and then placed them in a sturdy binder.
I had Therese read the book first. Then she worked on the chapters according to how they are broken up in the guide. She worked on the study guide 3 times a week this time since she was already reading quite a few other books for her U.S. history class.

What Did We Think of the Frankenstein Study Guide?

I love how the study guides go along with great classic novels. I love the ability to be able to print the guides for both my kids. Since the study guides are reproducible, I can easily print two copies off and save money at the same time. One thing I like is how the company has a Pinterest board for each of its study guides. These boards provided more activities to utilize. I loved the recipe section to go along with the books! These added activities really make a Literature class come to life.

Review~ Basic Math Skills Rescue Parts 1 & 2 from Math Essentials

Disclaimer~ I received a COMPLEMENTARY copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.

Math! Math has been one of those subjects that have been a blessing and a nightmare at the same time. If your child is using the wrong program it can be a disaster. If you find the right one, it often feels like a miracle. We've struggled over the years trying to find the right one for both my kids. Often in the process, they may fall behind or just need a refresher of topics.
Basic Math Skills Rescue Parts 1 & 2 from Math Essentials helps fill in the gaps and strengthens their math skills!

Basic Math Skills Rescue Parts 1 and 2 contain 6 books in two volumes. The two volumes are soft-cover workbooks. Included in the books is video access to online videos for each lesson. If a student completes both volumes, they would be ready for Algebra 1. The books and the videos make for an amazing learning experience. When students complete them both, they will have all the skills they need to be successful in the higher math courses they will take in the future.

The program consists of two volumes.

Volume 1
Whole Numbers, Fractions, Decimals, and Percents

Volume 2
Geometry, Problem Solving, and Pre-Algebra

In the front of each book, are instructions for the teacher and student. A quick easy guide on how to use the books is included. 5 simple steps to follow and the student is ready to go.

The daily lesson contains three parts: Review Exercises, Helpful Hints, and Problem Solving. The program is easy to follow. Each lesson should take about 15-20 minutes of instruction per day. That's it! The lessons are concise and well laid out. These short, easy lessons help students master math skills and reinforce the skills learned through consistent review!

The answer key is provided at the back of the workbook, as well as, a glossary and a few math table charts for added help. The math table charts include... Important Symbols, Multiplication Table, Commonly Used Prime Numbers, Squares and Square Roots Table, and Fractions/Decimals Equivalents.

How Did We Use Basic Math Skills Rescue from Math Essentials?

We followed the simple and easy how-to-use instructions.

1. Michael completed the review section. Having to show all his work was a big thing for him. He likes to do a lot of the math in his head, so he was not a fan of having to show all is his work.

2. Michael then moved on to the new material being presented. Most of the new material being presented he had already done. We were using this program as a review of skills. Michael did fin the helpful hint section useful. The examples show helped remind him of how to work through a problem if it was something he hadn't done in a while.

3. Michael worked through the sample problems again showing all his work. He offered a few complaints about it, but he did do it. I told him by showing all his work, it helps him find out where he went wrong if he did not get the correct answer the first time. Of course, this is something I've stressed since the beginning, but he has always chosen to ignore my "helpful" advice.

4. Now the real-life problem-solving section was up. In this section, Michael was given a math word problem that used real-life problems. He's always been great at word problems, so this section was a breeze for him. I love that the lesson included a problem that helps students see math in the real world.

5. Michael then checked his own work using the answer key located in the back of the book.

I loved how the book encouraged independent learning styles. If a student needs more help with a topic, they can go online and check out the video lessons.

What Did We Think of Basic Math Skills Rescue?

I have Michael work through the books just for review. I figured it would help keep his math skills ready for the SAT test he would be taking this fall.
I think the books are a great way to help reinforce math skills. The books can be used as a review or as supplemental help for a struggling learner. Either way, the books will help students become stronger and faster with their math skills.

Review~ WORLD Watch News

Disclaimer~ I received a COMPLIMENTARY copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.

Good morning, friends!
How do you start your day? Growing up, I remember my dad reading the paper and watching the morning news before heading off to work. Sadly, this is a habit I didn't pick up. I tried watching the news when the kids were little but often found the material not appropriate or not real news. I wanted to know what was going on in the world, not which celebrity was having a baby or what the newscasters had done the night before.  As the kids got older, I found the news more and more biased. Sure, we could watch multiple stations to get the full story, but who really has time for that. We just wanted the news presented in a straightforward manner. Facts, not opinions! So when we were asked to review WORLD Watch news, we were very interested in seeing how the news and current events were presented!

WORLD Watch news is a video current events program designed to give busy homeschooling (or non-homeschooling) families the news in just 10 minutes! The videos focus on current events and give them the attention they need and deserve. Families will learn what is going on in the world around them from biblically sound headlines, news briefs, and feature stories.
Parents can feel confident that the news being presented is safe for their families. It allows families to encourage their children to be aware of news literacy without the fear of having them see topics they do not feel are appropriate.

So How Does WORLD Watch Work?

An annual subscription allows families to receive an email for each weekday of the week. So Monday through Friday, an email will be sent and families will be able to watch a quick 10-minute video presenting the current events for that day. The videos can also be found on the WORLD Watch website. The videos can easily be sent to the family's TV to watch the news video together too.
The company is currently working on a TV and mobile app. They hope to have this released within the next year!

WORLD Watch news reports cover history, technology, science, economics, government, world cultures, and more.

So for example, today's topics covered were.....

Taliban takes over entirety of Afghanistan
Acapulco recovers from earthquake
El Salvador adopts Bitcoin as official currency
Arlington explains budget with Legos
Caleb reports on flyovers

and more!

The program director and host is Brian  Basham. He's been in broadcasting for over 15 years. He presents the news in a clear, precise manner. No drama, no opinions. He presents the facts!

What Did We Think About WORLD Watch News?

For this review, we received a 6-month subscription. The company offers an annual subscription, as well as a monthly subscription.

WORLD Watch news reminded me of a program we had in my Catholic high school. Each morning during homeroom, we'd watch a 10-15 minute news program geared to high school students. It covered the current events going on at that time. At that time, the big news was the Persian Gulf war. It helped us stay on top of what was going on in the world without all the other unnecessary topics out there.

As a parent of two teens, I found the quick, easy-to-follow 10-minute videos perfect for teens. They presented a variety of topics, especially the most top current events. There was no drama, talk of inappropriate things, and I loved how the program focused on important issues. Kids are already bombarded with images of famous people and what they do on social media. Having current events covered is so much more important. Kids need to be aware of the issue going on in the world. They need to be more aware of these things than what shoes some girl wore for a night out on the town.

"I think we risk becoming the best-informed society
that has ever died of ignorance."
~ Reuben Blades

Michael enjoyed the lack of "extra" talk that is so often found in everyday news channels. He just wants the news, nothing more. He hates listening to the regular news and hearing all the gossip. He finds it rather annoying. He liked that the news segments were short and quick to the point.

Therese felt the program was O.K. She liked the fact that just the news was presented. There was no extra "garbage" she had to sit through. She feels that if she wanted to know about pop culture she can find that out all on her own on social media. It doesn't need to be the main focus of the news.

Review~ ACT Mom Online Class

Disclaimer~I received a COMPLIMENTARY copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.

Recently, we were offered a chance to review the ACT Mom Online Class from ACT Mom. Therese was thrilled to have the chance to use this course since she is planning to take the ACT test this year.

ACT Mom Online Class includes streaming videos, materials, and practice questions. The online class is thirteen hours long. Nine hours of in-person instruction. The same as the in-person class but through videos. Five additional hours of teaching videos and practice are included.

For this review, we received access to the ACT Mom Online Class and a binder filled with various materials for the student. Online access for the ACT MOM Online Class is one year and currently costs $250 (plus $8.25 for shipping). The binder included multiple practice test in page protectors with an answer key, a pencil case with a dry-erase marker, a cloth to clean the dry erase, and I think little sticky notes (or Therese added them to her pencil case).

What is the ACT Mom Online Class?

The ACT Mom Online Class is prerecorded sessions that are presented in bite-size segments and followed up with practice questions. The practice questions are to help reinforce the material presented in the lesson and help students see what they understand or do not understand. The goal of the course is to help students increase their ACT score and hopefully receive scholarship money from the college of their choice.

The class is divided into the various topics covered in the ACT test. Students will work through a English section, a Math section, a Science section, and a Reading section. Each subject is broken up into multiple sessions. As the students work through each section, they will be introduced to the various types of questions they will see on the actual ACT test. Students are taught how to work through the questions and practical advice is given. The goal is to help the students achieve their best possible course.

As students work through the class, they will complete one ACT practice test. The online class also offers links to six additional practice tests for the students to work on.

What Did We Think of the ACT Mom Online Class?

I only briefly looked over the course when we received access. I immediately sent the information to Therese so she could start the class. From what I saw, the class looks extremely well done and the enthusiasm she has while teaching the class is amazing. The class is educational, engaging, and fun. It is not some boring class where students will zone out!

Therese has enjoyed the class immensely. She feels she has learned a lot. She loves the practical advice that is given. She has commented multiple times that she has learned things she was never taught, especially when it comes to English. This surprised me since we have always used such a strong English program. I was looking over the notes Therese has taken, and she has written done information about commas, semicolons, and word endings.

She said the teacher has offered a lot of valuable advice about how to do well on the test and why it's important to score high when looking to earn scholarship money. She offers advice on test taking skills, time management, and ways to remember particular concepts. Therese has not competed the course yet, but she already feels that this course will help her get into the college of her dreams.

I'm thrilled that she is learning from his course. The knowledge she is picking up will help her feel confident when she takes the test but also give her the skills to ace the test. It is clear the Katie Johnson has spent years learning the ins and outs of the ACT test. I'm just glad she has decided to share that knowledge with others.

Review~ It's NOT Greek to Me! from Ready to Teach

Disclaimer~I received a COMPLIMENTARY copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.

Building a strong vocabulary is important for students whether or not they are heading off to college. Over the years, I have encouraged my kids to read great literature, but I still wanted to help them build their vocabulary. Learning Greek morphemes is an amazing way to help students increase their vocabulary. I was thrilled when we were given the opportunity to review It's NOT Greek to Me! from Ready to Teach. I knew this would be extremely helpful as they prepared for taking the SAT and ACT.

The Ready to Teach program was developed by Dr. Alene Harris. Dr. Harris earned her Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University in Tennesse and her Master's in Education from George Peabody College for Teachers. She developed her courses for Ready to Teach during her 30 years of teaching language arts and science, conducting and publishing reports, and in-service workshops. Her dedication and enthusiasm have created a program that shines above the others!
Ready to Teach offers a variety of programs: Getting Off to a Good Start(Manual for Teachers), It's Not Greek to Me!, and Latin Lives in Your Vocabulary!

For this review, we received the It's NOT Greek to Me! Instructional Set.
This set includes the following:

It's NOT Greek to Me! Instructional Manual
(Paperback, 126 pages)

It's Not Greek to Me! Student Manual
(Paperback, 124 pages)

USB Flash Drive containing 12 PowerPoint, self-paced lessons

Single Whole Punch

Binder Ring for Flashcards

The It's NOT Greek to Me! Instructor's Manual is 126 pages. The book contains full lesson plans, tests,  answer keys, flashcards, ideas for bulletin boards, and graphics to use.

The Student book is 123 pages. It contains places for student's notes and lessons activities, 12 coloring pages for making study note cards, and a mystery story that presents morpheme words in their context.

The included flash drive provides students with PowerPoint lessons to go along with the lessons in the student workbook.

The student book contains 12 lessons. The book also contains review sections for previously learned lessons. There are three review sections. The first is after lesson 2, the second one is after lesson six, and the final review section is after lesson 12.

The program is completely self-paced. It is perfect for older students who love to work on their own. It is great for busy parents who may not have the time to teach another class.

The program uses a unique way to teach vocabulary. It uses Greek Morphemes. Greek Morphemes are parts of words that originated in the Greek language. It's NOT Greek to Me! uses over 200 roots, prefixes, and suffixes to help students learn the meaning of words. It reminds me of a class I took in high school dealing with Latin roots. It is a fantastic program to help students prepare for the SAT or ACT tests.
Overall, we found the course to be very well done. Michael and Therese are getting ready to take college placement tests, so this course was great for them. Therese also found the course helpful since she is planning on studying to be a physician assistant in college. She said the course would have been beneficial last year when she studied human anatomy and physiology.
