Homeschool Science Review

During our long homeschooling journey, I had heard of Supercharged Science, but had never actually given it a try. I debated it, but for some reason I just never got around to checking it out and ordering. So when we were given the chance to review e-Science Homeschool Science Curriculum from Supercharged Science, I was thrilled. I couldn't wait to see everything this amazing science curriculum had to offer the kids.

Supercharged Science is a well-known company that provides science curriculum for families and teachers. The curriculum was created by Aurora Lipper, who is a university professor, a pilot, and a fellow mom. She even worked for NASA. Her goal was to teach science in a different way. A way that would encourage a student's learning. She wanted students to focus on the wonder, discovery, and exploration of science. There are no boring textbooks to read here. Science lessons are hands-on and filled with fun. The classes taught at Supercharged Science meet and exceed state and national standards and STEM requirements.

What is e-Science Homeschool Science Curriculum?

Supercharged Science

e-Science Homeschool Science Curriculum is an online curriculum for students in grades K-12th.
e-Science is broken up into two section, K-8 and 9-12. Each grade level covers a complete science curriculum. The curriculum covers a variety of topics. Biology, geology, robotics, physics, astronomy, electricity, and chemistry are just a few of the subjects covered. More topics are being added. e-Science Homeschool Science has something for everyone. Even the student that dreads science will find a lesson they love. The curriculum is self-paced, so students can easily work through the program at their own pace.

Each science lesson includes:
video demonstrations
how-to lessons
explanations
shopping lists for experiments
worksheets, quizzes, tests
Unlimited support
24 hour,7 days a week access

The videos, usually 5-20 minutes long, explain the science topics in a clear, concise way. It allows students to understand what they are learning about and enjoy learning about science. The curriculum provides students with over 1,000 science activities, experiments, and projects.

Older students can easily work through the program with little to no help from mom. The program even provides shopping lists for the experiments, student worksheets, quizzes, and tests.

How Did We Use e-Science Homeschool Science Curriculum?

For this review, we received a full year of access to e-Science Homeschool Science Curriculum for all the levels, K-12th. The program can be used either by topic or grade level. We focused on the 9th-12th grade section since both my kids are in that age range.

~9th-12th Grade Science Topics~

Physics
AP Apologia Physics or Apologia Physical Science

Chemistry
AP Apologia Chemistry or Apologia Chemistry

Astrophysics

Biology
Apologia Biology or Advanced Biology

Electronics

Alternative Energy

Since they were studying earth science/physical science this year, we stuck with topic that worked with the curriculum we were already using. When I clicked on the Advanced Projects (High School) tab, I was thrilled to see under the Physics section there was already a section for Apologia's Physical Science course. This was perfect for us since we were already using this curriculum. We easily found the lesson/experiment we were already working on and added the lesson from e-Science to our weekly schedule. I loved how it was all laid out for the kids. The links were easy to find. I no longer had to teach science! If you're like me, science is the one subject I tend to dread teaching. It wasn't my strong suit while in high school, so I'm not overly confident when teaching it. e-Science Homeschool Science Curriculum was perfect for this!
So, for us was started with Lesson Lesson 14.

The kids learning about wavelength and sound.

Even Mama Kitty wanted in on the fun!

I loved having the lessons explained to the kids and having the experiments demonstrated as well. I felt the kids were truly learning science even though I wasn't the one teaching them. This e-Science is great for allowing older students to gain more independence while they are learning.

E-Science Homeschool Science Curriculum even has two sections, Teaching Resources and Award-winning Science Fair Projects. I definitely recommend looking through both of these sections. I was amazed with all the various resources available.

Next year, Michael and Therese are taking biology at a co-op one day a week. The lessons on e-Science Homeschool Science Curriculum will be a fantastic way for them to continue their lessons at home. Once I get the syllabus from their co-op teacher, I'll locate the corresponding resources and come up with a separate syllabus for them to follow at home.

Good morning! I hope y'all had a wonderful week. Ours was a busy one. Trying to get school work finished up, bags packed for Michael, and all the very day chores around here. We had a low key weekend. Therese and I spent the weekend curled up reading books and planting a few flowers. We had a girls weekend and it was nice to spend it with my girl.

Welcome to another Happy Homemaker Monday. I'm joining Sandra again for this charming look into the lives of mothers everywhere. I love how she brings attention to all the things moms do, gives a voice to moms everywhere, and encourages us along the way. Want to join in? Head on over and see what it's all about!

What I'm doing right now~
Obviously typing up this post, but I'm sipping my cup of coffee and listening to the birds sing. I'm enjoying the peace and quiet since I'm the only one up. Well, the only person up. All the animals are up and have been feed.
Chickens- done
Cats- done
Dog- done
Fluffy stray cat- done (he's slowly getting used to me. I haven't been able to pet him yet, but he gets close to me now.) We need to come up with a name for him. It's gray and fluffy. Any suggestions?

What's for breakfast~
Coffee as usual. Gotta have my cup of coffee. I'm also having an organic protein shake. It's chocolate and peanut butter. It tastes just like a peanut butter chocolate shake.

The weather~
It's hot and muggy here. It never fails. We go from winter to summer in about a week. We get spring days in February thrown in here and there. I don't mind the heat, but the dog has been panting, so I may have to turn on the air for the poor girl.

Thursday~ Partly Cloudy, 86*
Friday~ Sunny, 85*

I have a huge pile to get through over the summer. I'll have plenty of reading time once Therese starts swim practice. Two hours a day sitting at the pool while she practices. Sunshine and a good book. It doesn't get better than that!

The Babysitter
The Tattoo Artist of Auschwitz
Lilac Girls

Movies and TV shows  on the list for the week~
Since we are having a girl's week. Therese and I have a list of movies to watch.

Good morning, everyone. I hope all you amazing mamas had a wonderful Mother's Day!
Saturday was a busy day for us around here. Michael and dad worked on a truck, since a certain young man gets his permit this week. Michael also had to serve Mass on Saturday night. After Mass, Michael and Therese joined a few friends for a spring formal. Everyone look stunning in their dresses and suits. It's a shame it was chilly and rainy here.  Can you believe I got NO pictures! Oh well, I guess there is always next year.
On Sunday we stayed home and relaxed a bit. The day was rainy and dreary so it was a perfect day to curl up on the couch and read a good book. We had a low key day. Pizza for dinner and chocolate brownies for desert made by the kids. My sweet hubby got me my perfume for Mother's Day.

I had just run out, so it was perfect timing. I discovered this scent last year and fell in love with it immediately.  He also ordered me flowers, but somehow selected the wrong sate for delivery. So I will be getting flowers later on this week. It will be a nice surprise.
Things have been crazy around here, so I finally getting a chance to join Sandra again for her weekly Happy Homemaker Monday again!

O.K., enough about our weekend. Let's get on with our Happy Homemaker Monday!

~The Weather~
It's yucky here! The temperatures have dropped and rain has settled in. Thankfully, it gets warmer around Wednesday.

It's yucky here. The temperatures have dropped and rain has settled in. Thankfully, it gets warmer around Wednesday! I am getting tired of all this rain.

Monday~ Rain, 59*
Tuesday~ Mostly Cloudy, 56*
Wednesday~ Mostly Cloudy, 67*
Thursday~ Partly Cloudy, 71*
Friday~ Scattered Showers, 69*
Saturday~ Partly Cloudy, 72*
Sunday~ Partly Cloudy, 78*

~On My To Do List~
Laundry- as usual
Cleaning the house- the pets have been losing their winter fur so the floors are always covered with hair
Change the sheets and wash the blankets
Wash the rugs- they need washed and I need a sunny day to hang them out on the line

~Our Menu for the Week~
Monday~ Grilled Chicken , Roasted Potatoes, and Grilled Asparagus
Tuesday~ Spaghetti and Meatballs
Wednesday~
Thursday~ Dinner out at our local Mexican restaurant (Thank you dinner for Michael and I for teaching first grade religious education at our local church. Michael was my aid this year) Daddy and Therese will probably have a daddy/daughter dinner out
Friday~ I'm not sure. The boys have plans, so it'll just be Therese and I

~What I'm Working On~
Next year's school plans & lessons- I'm all done except for history
Clearing old books the kids no longer need
Going through out grown clothes
Straightening up the basement pantry

~What's on TV~
I started watching a new series which is pretty big news for me. I'm not much of a TV watcher. On Tuesdays, I record The Village and then watch it once everyone else is in bed. I curl up the couch with a cup of tea and my sweet kitties. We sit back and watch the show. Therese and I have been watching re-runs of Friends. It brings back memories of my friends and I piling into a dorm room sitting on a twin size bed and watching it together. The good old days!

~What I'm Looking Forward To~
The end of school and summer!
I can't wait to relax and unwind with the kids. We have a beach trip planned with cousins and can't wait to go. Michael has 3 other trips schedules this summer: a shooting camp, work camp with our church, and a week away for his shooting championships. Therese starts swim soon and is extremely excited. The school year has flown by and we all are looking forward to summer break!
Sunshine, sitting by the pool, and flip flops...what's not to like?

~ Inspirational Quote for the Week~
“My mother gave me life and never asked for anything in return.
That is her secret you know, always giving without any expectations.
She is as constant as the sunrise, the moon, the stars, and I count on her.
She helps me find my way through the years and makes me laugh while doing it.
There are some things only a mother can do.”

"A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts."

Review~ Vocabulary Virtuoso PSAT -SAT Book 1

Please Note~ This post may contain affiliate links. If you choose to click on a link, add it to your cart and complete your purchase, I will receive a small percentage. We are very grateful for this additional source of income. Thank you.

Having two kids in high school seems impossible, but here we are! Like most parents of teens, I want them to be well prepared for the SAT test when it comes time to take it. So when we were given the chance to review Vocabulary Virtuoso PSAT-SAT Book 1 from The Critical Thinking Co., I knew I wanted it!

The Critical Thinking Co.  has been around for awhile now. I'm sure somewhere along your homeschooling journey, you have come across one of the many amazing books offered by this company. They provide both students and parents with a huge selection of books to help with their educational needs. Reading, writing, math, science, and social studies are subjects that are covered in the products. The Critical Thinking Co.'s goal is to help develop a students critical thinking skills so that they can improve their grades and test scores. By helping students improve their critical thinking skills, they are helping them achieve their goals and dreams for the future.

Mountain of Grace Homeschooling

What is Vocabulary Virtuoso PSAT-SAT Book 1?

For this review, we received a digital download of the eBook Vocabulary Virtuoso PSAT-SAT Book 1 from The Critical Thinking Co. The book can also be purchased in a paperback version. Both are $16.99. The eBook version can be printed out and used by multiple students. The eBook is 208 pages and introduces students to 180 vocabulary words and covers a few concepts.

~Literary~
characterization, idioms, puns, jargon, aphorisms, allusions, irony, and theme

~Rhetorical~
Art of Persuasion in Speech and Writing, Using Extended Simile to Write a Poem

~History~
The Renaissance and Renaissance Artists

Vocabulary Virtuoso PSAT-SAT Book 1 is broken up into 20 lessons that focus on a vocabulary list. After 4 lessons, the book does have a small review section that covers what the students have already covered in the previous 4 lessons. At the end of the book, an answer key is provided!

Each lesson contains a vocabulary list, definitions, pronunciation key, parts of speech, and different words choices for each vocabulary word. The word choice section covers synonyms, idioms, and various word phrases. The lesson also provides students with a variety of activities to help them learn the new words and more importantly understand the words and how to use them correctly. All the activities will encourage students to build a stronger vocabulary.

Each lesson is broken up into different sections. So for example in lesson 1, students had to use the vocabulary words to fill in sentences, add the vocabulary words to a story, unscramble the word to find the correct spelling and to learn what it means, match the vocabulary word to its definition, and complete sentences to show that they understand the meaning of the vocabulary word. The purpose of the book is to increase the students vocabulary and improve their language arts skills. Both of these goals will create stronger readers and stronger writers, which will hopefully prepare them for college and their future jobs.

How Did We Use Vocabulary Virtuoso PSAT-SAT Book 1?

Since we received the eBook, I was able to print out each lesson for both Michael and Therese. I did one lesson at a time and had them add them to their English binders. Since each lesson is broken up into different sections, I had them complete one or two sections a day. Here is an example how we worked through a week.

~Lesson 1~
Day 1~ Read the list of vocabulary words, pronunciation key, and definition. I also had them listen to the pronunciation on their phones so they knew they were saying the word correctly.
Day 2~ Complete section A & B- Sentences
Day 3~ Complete section C & D- Fill in the story and unscramble the word
Day 4~ Complete section E- Match the word with the definitions
Day 5~ Complete the sentence

We spent one week on each lesson. You could easily spread it out to cover each lesson for 1.5 weeks. This would give the students a full year to work through the book.

What Did We think of Vocabulary Virtuoso PSAT-SAT Book?

Let's be honest. Their first reaction after reading the vocabulary list for week one was "Who even uses these words?!?" After explaining to them why it's important to learn new words, they diligently sat down to work through the lesson. Being strong readers, they both have come across a wide selection of words over the years. New vocabulary words and how to look them up was nothing new for them. They both found the lessons easy to follow and complete. The lessons did require them to think and use their brains, but neither of them found the lesson frustrating or too difficult.
I loved the fact that they were learning new words that they had never come across before. I was pleased the lessons were fairly simple and easy to understand. This allowed them to focus on the vocabulary words and their meanings, which I hope will prepare them for the SAT test when they go to take it. Our current school year is coming to an end, so we will stop working through Book 1 and pick it up again next year. I've already added it to our lesson plans. My plan is to purchase book 2 once book 1 is completed and complete book 2 by the end of next year.

If you're looking for a study aid to help build your students vocabulary, I highly recommend this this book from The Critical Thinking Co.

We had another beautiful crowning of Mary this year. The first graders in my religious education class helped lead the Hail Mary as we processed over to the church. They have all worked so hard with learning their prayers. They were very excited to lead.
