What Our Homeschool Day Looks Like

Have you ever wondered what a homeschooler's day look likes?
Have you ever thought about homeschooling, but didn't know where to start?
Well, figuring out your schedule would be a good place to start.

If you asked 10 homeschoolers what their day looked like, you would get 10 different answers.  No matter what their schedule looks like, I'm sure their will be some similarities. Without some type of schedule, homeschooling would be extremely difficult and it would become very chaotic.

So here is what our daily schedule looks like......

7:00-7:30~ Wake Up & Let the Chickens Out
7:30-8:00~ Eat Breakfast, Shower, and Get Dressed
8:00-9:00~ Morning Chores
*Make Bed and Straighten Up Room
                      *Feed Cats & Dog
*Unload Dishwasher and Load Up Breakfast Dishes
                      *Wipe Down Bathroom
                      *Clean Out Litter Boxes
                      *Start Laundry
9:00~ Morning Prayer
9:15-10:15~ School Starts....Religion, English, Spelling, Handwriting
10:15-10:30~ Break Time...Take Dog Out & Get a Snack, Drink, or Both
10:30-12:00~ Return To School....Latin, Math, Science, History, etc.
12:00~ Take Dog Out Again
12:15~ Lunch
12:45-1:30~ Finish Any Work Not Completed
1:30- 3:00~ Take a Walk and Free Time
3:30~ Afternoon Chores...Varies By Child
4:00~ Reading Time

First off, let me say that this schedule happens on a good day. It is definitely not an every day thing!
There are plenty of days that the schedule does not end up looking like this. Certain lessons may take longer (kids don't want to do their work), household chores may take longer (someone's room looks like a bomb blew up), errands may need to happen (groceries, library), doctor's appointments, field trips, etc.

We do try to get all of our schooling done by 2:00. If we finish earlier, that's even better! I am a firm believer that children need to be children. They have all the time in the world to "work" all day. Free time encourages creativity and helps a child figure themselves out.

We prefer to do our school work in the morning. I have found that my kids work better when they have just started their day. We don't start super early because Princess P likes to sleep in a little. Trying to get her up before 7:30 is horrible. There are many days she is just getting up at 8:00. This works for her. She just ends up having more chores to do in the afternoon than Lego Man. Lego Man is my early riser. He usually gets up between 6:00 and 7:30. If he does get up earlier, he just gets some free time in the morning or he can start his chores and school work early. I leave it up to him on most days. This allows him to finish up earlier and have more free time in the afternoon.

We have a schedule, but by being flexible with it I am able to work with both children one on one and provide what they need. Being able to do what works best for my children is one of the best reasons I have found to homeschool. What works for us may not work for another family, but that's O.K. Each homeschooling family is able to find what works best for them and go with.
Just remember that what works one year may not work the next year. Just go with it.
Change it up and find your new rhythm.

  2. My day actually resembles yours fairly closely--well we don't have chickens...but it's very similar. It's such a blessing to be able to just go with the flow and adjust as needed!

ps. Can you change my link? I should be http://farmfreshadventures.blogspot.com. Right now it takes people to my email. LOL!

  4. Love your schedule. It seems we are on the go too much for me to actually stick to anything, even on a good day! But alas, I try!
