Cross Country Trip

Welcome back to day 2 of our Yellowstone trip. Day 2 was a long day and we saw a lot. After lunch, we started heading towards the Northwest entrance. Along the way, we saw just a few more things.

The landscape is impressive here. As you drive through the park you can;t help but think about the God and all that he created. The variety of is stunning. You can see mountains, trees, lakes, wild animals. It truly is a breathtaking place to visit.

When we entered Mammoth Hot Springs, we saw a herd of elk just hanging around town. They were resting on the grass. The park rangers were busy trying to keep people away. They seemed very docile at lounged about, but they could quickly jump up and attack.

Of course while we were there we had to go through the original gate. The North Gate is the only gate that is opened year round. The North Gate is famous for the Roosevelt Arch. The arch was dedicated on April 24, 1903 by President Theodore Roosevelt.

As we headed home for the day, we were lucky to come across a herd of elk. It was mating season while we were there, so we were able to see two males fighting over some female elks. The fight wasn't quite far. It was an older and larger elk against a young male. Needless to say, the older elk won.

The chase begins....

The proud victor!

We were greeted with beautiful sunset as we left the park.

Till Next Time,
Monique

Homeschool Crew Review~ First Form Latin from Memoria Press

Please Note~ This post may contain affiliate links. If you choose to click on a link, add it to your cart and complete your purchase, I will receive a small percentage. We are very grateful for this additional source of income. Thank you.

Latin Curriculum

Over the past few years, we have used a variety of curriculum from Memoria Press. We have enjoyed all the books we have used and we were excited to give First Form Latin Complete Set a try. First Form Latin would be our third Latin curriculum from Memoria Press to use.

Memoria Press

Memoria Press is homeschool curriculum company that provides parents with an entire homeschool program based on the classical approach. We love how the company is Christian based and I always know my kids will learn a wealth of knowledge from the materials provided. Parents can find science, literature, Latin, geography, poetry, math, Greek, Christian studies, history, art, music, and other books for enrichment. They have everything. You can even buy an entire curriculum package to use for the entire year!

First Form Latin Complete Set
For this review, we received the First Form Latin Complete Set. The set includes the following materials.

Student Text
Student Workbook
Quiz and Test Booklet
Teacher's Manual
Teacher Answer Key
Pronunciation CD
Instructional DVDs
Flashcards

The set cost $125, but it comes with everything you would need to build a strong foundation for your student. The curriculum is geared for students in grades 4th through 9th. First Form Latin is a wonderful follow up for students who have completed the Latina Christiana curriculum. Of course if your student has not completed Latina Christiana, First Form Latin can still be used. It's also a good fit for beginners in grades 5 and up. First Form Latin is geared for the grammar stage of education. It focuses on grammar forms and vocabulary. This focus allows students to build on their knowledge as they enter into the logic and rhetoric stages.

Memoria Press wants students to succeed in their Latin studies, not give up and drop out. They do this by providing students with the knowledge to retain, understand, and comprehend the Latin they are learning. The workbooks allow students to put this knowledge to the test. The exercises gives students the mastery skills they need to excel in Latin.

Students using the First Form Latin will know the six indicative active tenses of the first two verb conjugations, five noun declensions, first and second declension adjectives, and will learn 185 vocabulary words. After completing First Form Latin, students will then be able to move on to the next book. Memoria Press offers Second Form Latin, Third Form Latin, and Forth Form Latin as the follow up books for this course. It would be perfect for your high school years!

How We Used First Form Latin?

Over the past few years my kids have studies Latin using Prima Latina and Latina Christiana. They also learned Latin prayers and hymns using a chant CD. For us Latin is an important subject to learn. I will tell you that Therese enjoys Latin, while Michael dreads the class. He says it is a useless subject, but he quickly sees in comes in handy during science class.

For this review, I received a complete set for one student, so I did have to buy an extra set of student books for my daughter. My kids are in the grade range of 6th to 9th grade depending on the subject. For English, I would say they are on a 6th-7th grade level. First Form Latin was a perfect for us. Some of it was review, but that was fine. It's always good to have some review and I think the kids enjoy seeing what they have learned. It also makes some aspects of a lesson easier to learn. Sometime they just need something to come easy, so they can have the courage and strength to tackle something new and challenging.

For me the pronunciation CDs and the instructional DVD's are a must. I took one year of Latin in high school and I'll be honest nit much stayed in my brain. These two resources have been a life saver for this mama. I also like how now that my kids are older they can work independently and complete their lessons on their own. This allows my over achiever to work ahead while my other can work at a pace more comfortable to them.

We've also enjoyed the flashcards! In the past I haven't ordered them and just created them myself using note cards. Having the flashcards already made has saved me plenty of time.
We love using the flashcards daily to master the vocabulary. We actually make it into a game. Whoever gets it right first, gets the card. Whoever has the most cards at the end of the game wins a small reward. When they were younger we did the same thing, except we played outside and they got move ahead if they got it right. It was sort of like Mother May I.

Hello There~ Daybook Post #1

Please Note~ This post may contain affiliate links. If you choose to click on a link, add it to your cart and complete your purchase, I will receive a small percentage. We are very grateful for this additional source of income. Thank you.

It's been a looooong time since I posted a Daybook post. I actually can't even remember when I did one last. After a few busy months, I realized I need time to slow done and just take a moment to reflect and appreciate all that God has given me. So my goal is to post a daybook post every Monday, of course we'll see if I can make it happen.

Outside my Window~
Clouds and more clouds. We have been having an exceptionally cool spring with lots of rain. We have had a few sunny days..thank goodness. Just when you can't take any more rain and dreariness, the sun comes out and shines for just a little bit. Yesterday was beautiful, but today it is gray and gloomy. At least the rain will be good for the garden.

What I'm Working On~
Cleaning out the house again. They kids ave finally agreed to part with some outgrown toys. We are donated all the goodies to our church's yard sale that will benefit our new rectory. Our rectory was completed last month and it now has to be furnished, since we just received the announcement that we will be a parish in July. We will have our own priest! It has been a long time coming.

What I'm Thankful For~
my family
our new priest
finally becoming a parish
our garden
my beautiful flowers
good friends to have a cup of tea with
my amazing kids

What I Am Reading~
The Good Earth by Pearl

I actually just finished this book. This was a pick for our homeschool groups book club for moms. I can't attend the meeting this month, but I still read the book. I'll admit I read it years ago in high school or college (can't remember which one). I remembered the main idea of the book but sadly didn't remember much else of the story. I'm glad I reread it. I think I got a lot more out of it this time around. It did get me thinking though. It today's world we have women fighting for certain rights (free birth control, abortion rights, etc) that have no real meaning. Reading this book made me realize that so many women today still face real discrimination or inequality like O-lan, Lotus, Pearl Blossom, or any of the female character in this book. It's sad to think we still have women in this world that do not have a say in their life and how they will live. Forced marriages, aborted because they are female, female genital mutilation, marriages where men can beat there wives and children, children being sold into the sex trade. The list goes on and on.  It's scary that we still have situations like these. It sad that here in the United States, women are fighting for free birth control, when other women around the world are fighting for their lives. What does it say about us as a society? Where are our values at? What has happened to our morals? I pray to our Blessed Mother that one day these things will change.

From Our Schoolroom~
We are done! Well actually, we are done most of our subjects. The kids will work through the summer on math. We also have a few products we are reviewing that we will work on during the summer too. One I'm really excited about is a study about the Wonders of the World! Stay tuned I can't

What's Coming Up For the Week~
Monday~ Boxing up stuff for the yard sale
Tuesday~ It's my birthday!
Wednesday~ I'm going to get a mani and a pedi
Thursday~  A visit from my parents (and we get to dog sit for a week)

Till Next Time,
Monique

Day two of tour of Yellowstone National Park has us heading in through the East Gate. During our visit to Yellowstone, we are staying in West Yellowstone, Montana. A new state to add to our journey!

On our second day in the park, we visited Old Faithful!

We only had to wait a few minutes before the geyser went off. The kids got an up close and personal spot on the boardwalk.

While near Old Faithful, we did take a quick peak into the Old Faithful Inn. The inn was built in 1903! It was constructed from local wood and stone from the area. It's considered the largest wooden structure in the world.

We walk along the boardwalk around the Black Sand Basin. We saw the Emerald Pool, the Rainbow Pool, and Sunset Lake.

After walking the boardwalk, we stopped for a picnic lunch. You'll never guess what cam by for a visit while we were eating....two bison.

and then we met up with them again

a Yellowstone traffic jam!

We had a fun filled day full of adventure.
Stay tuned for more of Day 2!

Till Next Time,
Monique
