Well, here it is....my first review for the new year. I was extremely excite when I was chosen for this review. With this being an election year, I knew the HISTORY Through the Ages Hands-on History Lap-Pak: U.S. Elections from Home School in the Woods would be a superb way for the kids to learn about our government and the whole election process.
For this review, we received the download version. The U.S. Elections Lap-Pak can be purchased two ways, a physical CD version can be purchased for $19.95 or a download version for $18.95.
So What is the U.S. Elections Lap-Pak?
First off, it's a wonderful way to introduce students to the United States government and election process. The Lap-Pak is filled a wide variety of hands-on activities for students to earn all about the election process. The Lap-Pak contains 21 lapbooking projects. The projects will focus on various topics......
- Forms of Government
- Three Branches of Government
- Suffrage
- Election Process
- Why We Vote
- Political Parties
- Campaigning & Money
- Statistics
- Election Day
- Inauguration Day
- and so much more!
The projects will have the students working on writing projects, drawings, creative projects, coloring, research, and tiny booklets.
The Lap-Pak comes with a 24 page booklet for reading and reference. You can print it in two different ways a 5x7 booklet or if you prefer an 8x10 book. We chose an 8x10 book. It was easier to print that way. The booklets provide all the information you need to do the lapbooking projects. The book is easy to read and understand. It helps the students fill in their projects.
So How Did We Use It?
"Elections belong to the people. It's their decision. If they decide to turn their back on the fire and burn their behinds, then they will have to sit on their blisters."
Abraham Lincoln
We added this into our weekly schedule. We spent 2-3 days a week on a new section. We did fall behind 2 weeks because of a nasty bug that went through our house.
The first thing I did was look over the introduction. Everything you need to know is there! It has all the supplies needed listed, a book list, a website resource list, a list of projects that will be completed, and instructions on how to make you lapbook.
We headed to the library and collected our books. I collected the file folders and card-stock to create the kids lapbooks. I put the lapbooks together while the kids worked on math. I wanted them ready to go for them. It was fairly easy to do. I'm sure older kids could assemble them.
I gave Michael and Therese a copy of the U.S. Elections booklet. I chose to print it out in a standard 8x10 form. I thought it would be easier to assemble and maybe it wouldn't get lost as easily. Small books tend to disappear around here.
After a brief introduction into why we are studying the process of the U.S. elections and the history of our government, we got down to work. The kids found the projects easy to do and understand. The topic is introduced and the main ideas are reinforced by the projects. We spend class time reading the U.S. Election booklet together. I have them take turns reading. I've encouraged both the kids to read the additional books we checked out at the library to get even more information.
"The ballot is stronger than the bullet."
Abraham Lincoln
"Mankind will never see the end to trouble until.....lovers of wisdom come to hold political power, or the holders of power...become lovers of wisdom."
Plato, The Republic
So What Do We Think of the U.S. Elections Lap-Pak?
We love it. It's full of great information and fun activities to help with learning about our election process! We are really enjoying this lapbook. We are not yet finished with it but the kids are eager to learn and we can't wait to see what else we will learn about with this lapbook. I think the kids have learned a lot about how our government was formed and why it's so important to understand the whole election process. Creating informed voters is essential for our country. I certainly do not want to send my kids out into the world picking a candidate because of how hip they seem, what they may promise, flashy commercials, etc. I want my children to be educated about the process and know how to weed through the "jungle" and see what is really there. An educated decision is a wise decision.
The U.S. Elections Lap-Pak provides everything you need to teach your children about the election process. This is important to me. All I had to do was look over the introduction and collect the materials we needed. The best, if you don't have the exact stuff listed, you can easily find substitutions around the house. Having everything all set to go is less work for me. I know the products from Home School in the Woods are high quality and I know I can trust them. I never have to worry about the information being provided.
The kids find the projects interesting and the projects always help reinforce the main points being covered for that subject
Michael has enjoyed how the projects have made the topics interesting to learn about. He likes the hands-on aspect of the lapbook. He's not a big fan of workbooks, so lapbooks are a favorite project for him. "Lapbooks are not boring!"
My kids are not fans of all the coloring, but again you can decide what they have to do. The U.S. Elections Lap-Pak is a great way to get children interested in our election process.
Simple, Easy, Fun!
