Homeschool Crew Review~ Forbrain
Recently, we were given the chance to review Forbrain from Sound for Life LTD. We didn't know much about this device, but we were eager to see how and if it works!
Forbrain is a technology device that was created to help children and adults that have speech and language difficulties. It can also improve attention, concentration, verbal working memory, and short-term memory. Forbrain is a headset that can be worn by both children and adults. It's recommended for the use with children ages 4 and up. The headset needs to be worn once or twice a day for at least 15 minutes each session. If the user wears the headset for this specified time frame, they should see results within 6 weeks!
For this review, we received the Forbrain bone conduction headset. The headset came in its own zippered, sturdy storage case. The case protects and helps keep the headset safe and sound.
The headset can be ordered on the Forbrain website for $299. When we received the box, we all were pretty curious about the headset. We were interested in seeing how the headset worked. Forbrain is simple and easy to use. The user simple places the headset on and is ready to go.
So How Does Forbrain Work?
First, the user turns on the headset. Then they place the loop behind their head. Next, they place the membrane in front of the ear. The Forbrain headset features bone conduction technology. This type of conduction is faster than air conduction. What exactly does this mean? Basically the headset rests on the user's cheekbone in front of their ear. This placement allows the sound of the users voice to be transmitted 10 times faster back through the headset. Once the headset is in place, the user just has to read, talk, recite poems, sing, hum, etc. Using the headset is simple and easy. Understanding the technology behind it may not be so simple and easy.
So Why Use Forbrain?
Forbrain can be used to help students with attention, speech, and memory! It will help them become better students.
~Attention~
The filter trains the brain to be more attentive. This not only helps with attention, but with auditory processing and sensory integration.
~Speech~
The technology helps improve speech fluency, pronunciation, sound discrimination, and rhythm. These are important for clearer and more effective communication.
Public speaking comes to mind!
~Memory~
Forbrain helps improve memory that plays a crucial part in reading comprehension, writing skills, and even everyday chatting with friends!
What we thought about Forbrain?
I will admit at first I really had my doubts on how this headset was really going to make any difference in Michael's speech. I just didn't completely understand the technology behind it.
Michael used Forbrain to help with speech clarity and pronunciation. Basically, the boy talks too quickly and doesn't enunciate his words well. This can make it difficult for people to understand him clearly. I am constantly saying "speak slowly and enunciate!" Michael's first reaction was that the headset was awkward to wear. I had him read aloud to practice his speaking skills. He said it was very strange to hear his own voice in his head as he read. He did say the programmed volume was a little too loud, so we did adjust it slightly. It did take a little time for him to get used to the headset. He eventually was comfortable with it....well for the most part he is. I will admit that he'd rather not practice or use the device at all. We have persevered and I have seen a slight improvement with his speaking. I think the more he uses the device the closer he will be to speaking clearly and correctly.
Forbrain can not only help students with their speaking, but it can help with memory, attention, ADHD, ADD, learning disabilities, sensory processing disorders. It can even improve singing. Therese is looking forward to giving this a try when she gets back into participating in her plays. I'm really surprised that she hasn't already "stolen" it away from her brother.
