Religion~
Matthew 26:26-28
For this bible verse, I created a cursive handwriting worksheet for the kids to copy. It's quick and simple.
Latin~ Gloria
We are still listening to the Chant CD I recommended in the Latin post. It has been one of the best ways for the kids and I to learn the Latin prayers and hymns.
History~
This was a little trickier to find. We learned about Japan and the Tokugawa Shoguns that ruled until 1853. We learned about the Meiji Restoration, the Emperor, and the westernization of Japan.
We checked out a few books about Japan from the library and read them.
Tokugawa Shogun Lesson Plan
The End of Shogun Rule
Japan Lesson Plan & Activities
Science~ 5 Senses
Sight, Touch, Hearing, Smell, Taste
We read a few books from the library.
The Magic School Bus Explores the Senses
The Five Senses
I did find a few lessons online to help us out.
Lesson # 1 (this is geared for older students)
Lesson # 2
Lesson # 3
To learn about sight, we headed outdoors to explore the world around us. I had the kids describe the things they saw.
For touch and taste, we played a fun game. The kids were blind-folded and then given objects to feel and taste. They had to describe what they felt or tasted. I then had them try and guess what they had felt or tasted. Lemons were probably the easiest thing to figure out.
Hearing can be a little tricky. We hear things all day, but do we really hear everything. We headed outside again to see what we could hear. We heard squirrels scampering about, birds, chirping, in the trees, chickens clucking, dogs barking, and so much more. It's amazing what we can hear when take the time to stop and listen.
Both my kids participated in a fun class at our local arboretum. In the class, they learned about animal senses. They had to identify various items while using the stronger senses that some animals have. Sense of smell was a fun activity. They went from various trees smelling cotton balls scented with oils. A few were easy to guess, but there were 2 scents that neither one could figure out.
Math~
1 foot =12 inches
3 feet = 1 yard
5,280 feet = 1 mile
Measuring things around the room has been a great way for the kids to learn about feet to inches. I did pick up a yard stick at Walmart to help them learn all about feet and yards. We also visited a fabric store since that's how we buy fabric.
A fun lesson I did a few years ago with the kids was The Foot Book by Dr. Seuss. I got the lesson from Scholastic. It's geared for children Pre-K to 2nd grade. It was fun and the kids learned a lot about measurements.
Geography~ Egypt
We labeled our map and than worked on our pages for our notebooks.
Country Outline Coloring page
Flag Coloring page
After labeling the map, I had the kids label a blank map for their notebook with the following places and items... Cairo, Nile River, Suez Canal, Sinai Peninsula, and the Red Sea.
One site we have used a lot over the years is Enchanted Learning. It has all times of worksheets that can help students learn. They offer a wonderful selection in their geography section.
Great Words~
Walt Whitman by George C. Cox
My Captain! My Captain!
We are still working on this poem. We have a few more week on this poem. The kids have worked on memorizing this poem about the death of Abraham Lincoln.
Till Next Time,
Monique
